Simply...

Birthday message from JT
Category: Life
"The Bassman's Birthday Message (in 2 parts):
It's Saturday morning and another hot & bright California day stretches out and yawns before me. What's the date? 06/17 it says on the phone, so it's Gemini weather. Next Tuesday is June 20th.
I've always been happy with the date my birthday falls on, it has a pretty symetry to it, don't you think? Not only in itself (20-06-60, 06-20-60), but in relation to the rest of the year, being midsummer day (or thereabouts), and far far away from Christmas (the other important birthday in the year). In fact, in the midst of a life filled with grumblings and dissatisfactions (I can't help it!), it's the one thing about myself that I have never doubted, never once thought, 'I wish I had his birthday' or 'I wish I had been born in that month' etc.. Hmm, how interesting that I've just made that realization. I'm the kind of neurotic that is always thinking, 'I wish I had his car, or their career, or his girlfriend, or her flat stomach (Lindsay Lohan's preferably)', but when it comes to birth date, there's no one who has me beat - it's just the best day of the year to have it, and you know what? There ain't no way no one can take it away from me. Ha!
Unfortunately this year, there's a little competition for people's attention. The focus is sadly not all on me. There's this darned World Cup. Now, Monsieur LeBon has already extolled the virtues of this competition, and I have to agree with everything the man says. I don't know how or when it happened, but somewhere between moving to LA and making 'Astronaut', I became a soccer crazy. I don't have a preferred team, but England, well, I don't know how that happened either, but somewhere between moving to LA and 9/11 something chemical changed in me, and now the sight of an English flag reduces me to tears, any time of the day or night. So I'm finding myself getting extremely emotional and excited during these England World Cup games, and now I'm feeling the same about the U.S.! Now I don't want to ramble on about soccer, but, come Tuesday, as I'm looking forward to inviting friends over to my Hollywood house to watch England v Sweden, I shall say to them, if they want to bring me a present please feel free to, as it also happens to be my birthday.
Part 2: Later that day. Do I seem shallow to you? Just as soon as I put the pen down from writing that last paragraph or two I thought, jeez, what kind of guy, about to celebrate his forty-sixth birthday, cares about Lindsay Lohan's stomach? Even the World Cup, or cars, or girls? At what age will my thoughts turn to matters of gravity, such as third world debt or global warming? Not yet it seems, although it sometimes really bothers me. My head seems to be stuck firmly in the simple things of life: a good breakfast, a good book, getting along well with others or what's on my i-pod.
I guess I should say thanks to all of you, for being a part of my life and helping me get this far. There's a lot of love in my life today, and I'm grateful for it all. My wife Gela, our kids, Atlanta, Zoe and Travis. Good friends I work with, Simon, Nick, Andy, Roger and Patty. Many many friends that I don't work with, friends I have breakfast with, that recommend me books, or songs, or paintings. My friends and I rarely talk about 'issues of the day', however - let it be known that I try to make sure that every breath of mine on this planet is for good, and I work hard not to be a drain on our community, moment by moment, and for now, that is going to have to do.
Feel free to have a treat on me today, to raise a glass perhaps, or simply reach out and kiss the sky. I'm happy to report that life is a long road that gets more interesting and more pleasant with every year passing. At least that's the view from my horse.
Love to you all
-JT"

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Today you can give thanks for a new playlist on the profile's music player, chosen by Nick Rhodes:
Silent Icy River
American Science
Land
Last Chance on the Stairway
If you don't already know it, here's the story behind "Silent Icy River," which was a B-side on one of the "What Happens Tomorrow" UK CD singles: The middle part of this song (where Simon sings "Time is a ribbon, a silent icy river …" etc) was originally a bridge in the middle of "What Happens Tomorrow." The band played the longer version of "What Happens Tomorrow" that included that bridge live in 2003 and early 2004 but ultimately cut it from the song for the final version that appears on "Astronaut." Fortunately for us fans, though, that segment survives in this B-side.

OK, so it seems like ya'll like the blogs
So I will keep doing them
A popular question that people ask of me is what the band are REALLY like….and while I am probably not the most objective person to ask, I do think I have a decent perspective. I am, after all, their longest standing employee (Dave C started one month after me)….
So I will start with the singer. Cause he's the easiest for me to do.
First of all, he is WAY smarter than he lets on, and I am certain he does this on purpose. He doesn't forget a thing you tell him, even if you told him ten years before. He will reference it back to you in some form, some way, some how, and totally knock you for a loop. "You remembered that?!" I say. He never answers, he just looks smug. I am never sure if telling him a secret is a good idea.
He is – contrary to what seems to be popular belief – one of the most considerate people I have ever met. He always looks people in the eye when speaking to them – a trait I admire and am often surprised is not universal.
What else can I tell you about him that wouldn't embarrass him or me? He likes to tease me. He makes fun of the way I speak. Often. He tries to teach me something new whenever I am with him. Sometimes, months later, he will tell me that what he told me that day was completely made up. I want to get mad at him for doing that, but I never do. He is my lunch buddy and whenever we are together we almost always have lunch together. We are dessert buddies too and he always divides whatever we share right down the middle. He is fair that way.
My opinion matters to him.
Sometimes, I read things fans write about him and it makes me sad. He is probably one of the most genuine people I know.
I have different types of relationships with each of them. Simon is the brother I always wished I had.

Вот еще статья про Ника на myspace.com:
Nick Rhodes Joins Bono, Phillipe Stark, Karl Lagerfeld & Bryan Adams, Among Others, To Design Exclusive, 'RockCouture' Guitar DURAN DURAN keyboardist, Nick Rhodes, has joined BONO, PHILLIPE STARK, KARL LAGERFELD, BRYAN ADAMS and a host of other stars to design and create his very own customised guitar, which will be on display as part of the 'Born To Rock' exhibition at HARRODS in London, from this coming Friday, February 2nd until Saturday, March 3rd, 2007.
This stunning exhibition, which was launched at Galeries Lafayette in Paris, and then played to record-breaking crowds and rave reviews at the National Museum of Ireland for eight straight weeks, gathers together over 150 priceless guitars, many of which have been either specially designed and built or never displayed before.
Divided into three stunning categories: 'Born To Rock™' showcases:
-- More than fifty unique and individually customised pieces, which together form the "RockCouture™" collection
-- An unprecedented collection of rare and vintage guitars - including the world's first electric guitar known as the "Frying Pan" (1931); and
-- Legendary guitars that have been played by many of the world's leading rockers, including Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Noel Gallagher, the Edge, Marc Bolan, Neil Young, and blues great Rory Gallagher.
Amongst the most inventive and spectacular displays, the Nick Rhodes' Guitar is a stunning "state-of-the-art" masterpiece, for which a Fender was hollowed out and the entire front of the body was replaced with a digital screen that allows customized film footage to play across the entire surface. This has created something that is both visually dynamic and unique – and that, in itself, was a technical challenge, that required design engineers in both the US and UK for the customization. Now an absolute one-of-a-kind, the guitar has a hefty price-tag attached to it – and promises to raise a significant amount for the exhibition's charitable causes when it is auctioned off later this Spring
Commenting on the guitar and forthcoming "Born To Rock™" exhibition Nick Rhodes said; "The Fender Stratocaster is a true design classic, visually it has remained much the same since it was first launched in 1954, so it was a real challenge to create a new interpretation. As a keyboard player, I was thrilled to be asked and decided to turn the guitar into a TV monitor. Since this had not been done before, I encountered numerous unexpected technical difficulties, but with the help of an expert team we were able to carve out the interior of the guitar body and pack it full of pixels. We then replaced the front plate with a semi translucent material so that the images generated would shine through. It was also very important that you were still able to play the guitar, so it simply has one additional cable which links to the computer providing the video content. When I curated the film we are using, it became evident that stark, graphic visuals and psychedelic patterns worked best. I am proud to say that this is the world's first TV guitar, I named it The Pixelator."
Within the exhibition, the Nick Rhodes Guitar will feature as one of the "RockCouture™" collection, alongside customised guitars, personalised and uniquely designed by a veritable who's who of artists and designers from the worlds of art, fashion and pop, including Bono, Bryan Adams, Phillipe Stark, Patrick Cox, Sir Peter Blake, Lord Richard Rogers, David LaChapelle, Jennifer Lopez, Graham Coxon, Philip Treacy and society jeweller Theo Fennell. Following the exhibition, these guitars will be auctioned off by Christies, with a view to raising over £1,000,000 for a number of different charities, nominated by the individual creators, including Keep A Child Alive, Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres, and Amnesty International.
Both the "RockCouture™" collection and "Born To Rock™" were conceived and curated by Ian Spero, the CEO of leading music marketing agency BigTime.TV.
DURAN DURAN are currently in the final stages of writing and recording the follow-up to their multi-platinum 'Astronaut' album (2004). The new album which is due for release in the Summer, will feature a collaboration with Justin Timberlake and three tracks produced by Timbaland (Missy Elliot/Jay Z/Justin Timberlake/Snoop Dog).
DURAN DURAN will join Sir Elton John, Bryan Ferry, Joss Stone and Pharrell Williams amongst others to perform at the Concert For Diana on the 1st July at Wembley Stadium. The band are expected to tour again later this year.

Новости и открытка от Ника из студии на MySpace:
"As I write to you, we are all sequestered together in a London studio amidst the tools of creation: guitars, keyboards, drums, percussion, computers, racks of effects and miles of cables connecting our raw ideas as they are committed to song. These are the final recording sessions for our forthcoming album. What seemed like a poem without an ending is finally starting to make sense, every moment another groove, another tune and some scattered words are married in musical alchemy.
This journey began in September 05 in the hills of Tiburon overlooking San Francisco, the same view that inspired many a Beat poet effortlessly stirred a rhythm in our band of gypsies. The genetic code of Duran Duran began to unravel and by the time we departed there was an air of confidence, a feeling that we had nearly completed the next album... but then fate always hides a card.
Our metamorphosis throughout 2006 developed in unexpected ways, maybe Kafka could have concocted an explanation, but the fiction became friction and our reality changed. Looking back has never been an appealing view for this crew. In September 06 we reconvened in New York City with one black suit down. Our sound exploded with pop culture's brightest flowers, we unlocked some doors that had been closed for far too long, and released a startling energy which manifested itself in the songs. The vision became clear, we returned to everything that had lured us in when we first met, the room was on fire.
Today I am smiling because I believe the genesis of this project has led us blindfolded to where we want to be, and here in London right now is that place, we are working with producer Nate Hills and engineer Jimmy Douglas, the combustion is not containable. I could try to conceal my excitement and anticipation for unleashing this record, but I'm not a good liar... This is for us, this is for you, for me it is without question the most exciting, vibrant, over amped Duran Duran release for many new moons, so let's see where the space ship takes us."

Новый плей-лист от Роджера на MySpace с комментариями:My current fave Duran moments of all time ...
Wild Boys 12" (aka Wilder Than Wild Boys Extended Mix) - still irresistibly stomping.
Hungry Like the Wolf - an all-time favourite with our live audiences.
Instant Karma - I think this version beats all other brands!
Virus - techno rocker that narrowly escaped from the "Astronaut" album at the last minute ... but one of my favourites from that period.
Notorious - A classic slab of '80s funk that's amazing to play live.
[Song list with notes by Roger Taylor]
2 NEW SONGS on Simon’s new playlist
NITE RUNNER - Well I think it's the funkiest thing we've done
FALLING DOWN – A song from the heart. Pride comes before a fall, but this song is about the enduring nature of human dignity and the will to survive even the most difficult situations – it's about hope.
SIN OF THE CITY – We have John to thank for this lyric about a tragedy at a nightclub in New York City. I think it's a very important track of "The Wedding Album."
TO THE SHORE – because it wasn't on the American version of our album, here it is now (that was later amended, wasn't it). People always ask me what a "sanhedralite" means. I thought it was a proper word but really, it wasn't.
WE NEED YOU – because we do...need you!
DURAN DURAN
Red Carpet Massacre, the new studio album
Released on Epic, November 13, 2007
Duran Duran's RED CARPET MASSACRE marks an all time creative high in the band's illustrious 29-year career. Like all good things, it came to those who waited.
By May 2006, after a two-year tour in support of their previous album ASTRONAUT, Duran Duran had completed 14 songs for a record provisionally titled 'Reportage.' But according to singer Simon LeBon "When we sat down and listened to what we had done on our own, we didn't feel we had a lead track, so we got in touch with Timbaland, who was the only producer out there that we knew we all liked." America's most pop savvy producer was more than happy to help and a session was duly set up at the Manhattan Center Studios in New York in September of the same year. What none of the band realized prior to taking off in this new direction, however, was that one of their biggest fans, Justin Timberlake, was also keen to get involved in the project, so when they arrived in the US he made room in the middle of his album release campaign to spend time in the studio with them.
But as if this new collaboration wasn't enough to really change things up, in the midst of all this, guitarist Andy Taylor split with the band, and with his departure the remaining four band members opted to change tack and start over completely.
"It was a real revelation working with producers that just understood the 'groove factor'," enthuses keyboardist Nick Rhodes "And this really brought back the heart and the spirit of Duran Duran. They're an extraordinary team," he continues. "They have a fantastic chemistry in the studio."
"With these guys on board it was as if Duran Duran had been taken and surrounded in chrome," adds bassist John Taylor.
"In the past we always went to the big cities to work with the people that were having hit records on the dance floor," explains drummer Roger Taylor. "When we got to New York last year we found that inspiration again."
With three glorious tracks under their belt (Nite-Runner, Skin Divers and Zoom In), the new Duran left US shores and returned to the UK where they proceeded to make an album that sounded quite different to 'Reportage' with a new production team headed by Timbaland's right hand man Nate 'Danja' Hills and long-time Timbaland collaborator Jimmy Douglass. According to drummer Roger Taylor; "the first time we met Timbaland we were very impressed with this guy sitting in the corner, Nate Hills. Not only was he one of the most incredible beat guys we'd ever come across, he was also a great musician – which filled the gap that might otherwise have been left with Andy gone. So after the initial sessions in New York, we basically kidnapped him and took him to London. He's got so many ideas. Talent in bucket loads."
Most of RED CARPET MASSACRE was recorded in three sessions: the first with Timbaland, with a guest spot from Timberlake, at the Manhattan Center Studios in New York; the second phase on the band's home turf, Sphere Studios in Wandsworth, London over Christmas 2006, presided over by Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass. And the final burst at Metropolis Studios in West London, produced by Hills and Douglass in early '07.
And that would have been that, had it not been for a chance meeting in Birmingham in the Spring when Simon LeBon hooked up again with Justin Timberlake during his UK tour. "Justin asked to hear everything we'd recorded and at the end he said, 'I think you need an Ordinary World to round things out.'" Duran's 1992 smash, Timberlake revealed, had been his favorite song when he was a pop crazed 14 year old. And as LeBon remarks, with powerful understatement: "What goes around, comes around."
A few days later when Justin's tour touched down in Manchester, England, Duran Duran and Timberlake got together in Blueprint studio and spent 36 hours writing and recording Falling Down – a tune destined to rank as one of the finest pop songs of the early 21st century and now the first single from their upcoming release. Marking one of Timberlake's first solo productions, this 'tempo-ballad' as Justin describes it is "very Duran Duran. He (Simon) wrote some very melancholic/inspirational/cryptic lyrics that are beautiful," explains Justin. "I think it's certainly one of the best lyrics that Simon's written for a very long time," concurs Nick.
Its parent album RED CARPET MASSACRE is consistently bold and adventurous. "We had to let go of most of our old ideas of what it means to be a band making this," notes bassist John Taylor, a point which is expanded by Nick Rhodes: "Most of our producers this time had never worked with a band before, and we'd never worked without a guitarist." "We really had to put our egos aside," adds Roger Taylor. "We've always been very self-contained in the past."
All four band members agree that they have never worked so hard and fast on any album as they did on RED CARPET MASSACRE. The results, however, speak for themselves. A stellar album that is daring and contemporary and yet quintessentially Duran Duran.
"By the time we get to finish an album," explains John. "It always feels to me like 'wow'… there's a book in there. This is another massive chapter in the band's history. We've made a record that we all feel really good about."

Tracklisting, with comments by Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor and Timbaland
The Valley
Music: Duran Duran and Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass
JT: "This was the breakthrough, the crossover, the song we could build an album around. We set up the gear in the control room and came up with a progressive groove. It's ended up becoming the album opener and feels like the perfect track to start our upcoming shows with."
SLeB: "It's about looking at life as moments rather than achievements. It's about making one's way through the trials and tribulations of life."
Red Carpet Massacre
Music: Duran Duran and Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass
NR: "Punk electronica - a bit like Warm Leatherette, the 1979 track by the Normal. Very tongue-in-cheek and very apropos of where we are now in the world with regards to reality TV and the whole 15 minutes of fame existence."
SLeB: "It's about Hollywood 'A-listers' having a go at each other – about the fantasy of celebrity and the media. It's sex, seduction and glamour - all the things we stand for, which is why we made it the album title. We wanted something with teeth."
Nite-Runner, with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland
Music: Duran Duran, Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Nate Hills.
Lyrics: Simon LeBon, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and Nate Hills
NR: "This was the first collaboration we did with Justin, Tim and Nate. It felt like we were in a nightclub. When we finished it we knew we were on the verge of something new."
SLeB: "This reminded me of NOTORIOUS when the band first split and we worked with Nile Rodgers."
Falling Down, with Justin Timberlake
Music: Duran Duran and Justin Timberlake
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Produced by Justin Timberlake
NR: "It's a really beautiful, fragile song. It was so easy. Sometimes that's the mystery of making music and writing songs. It can be just natural and happens there and then, and other times you can struggle for weeks and not get what you want."
SLeB: "It's about a crash I had when I was racing a motorbike, the thoughts that ran through my mind before I hit the ground. As soon as I got the chorus, Justin was like, 'That's it!!'"
JT: "It's easy to be esoteric. It's so much harder to write from the heart. This is an important song for Duran."
RT: "I'd just got back from my honeymoon in St Lucia and the phone rang. Justin was talking about us recording the new Ordinary World. An hour later we were all in a van driving to Manchester."
Skin Divers, featuring Timbaland
Music: Duran Duran, Timbaland, Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon and Timbaland
Co-produced: Duran Duran, Timbaland, Nate Hills
Timbaland: "That one hit me instant."
JT: "This is the song that best captures the sense of Timband meets Duran Duran. It wrote itself during a jam and then Tim finished off his parts a couple of months later when he was in the UK - very late at night, after a gig. He came down to the hotel ballroom and just recorded them on a laptop. f#$king genius. When you are that talented you don't need too much technology to create the magic!"
NR: "This is my favorite track. A real hybrid of Timbaland and Nate's grooves and our live playing. It's riddled with hooks."
Box full o'honey
Music: Duran Duran and Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass
NR: "I started playing some chords late one night in the studio and it sort of grew from there."
SLeB: "It's my best lyric on the album. I can see the person I'm writing about, my 'queen of tumbledown.' No, I won't say who she is. People seem to be able to really relate to this song. It touches them in an emotional way."
Tempted
Music: Duran Duran and Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass
JT: "This is the dance party track. It's arms in the air for French discos."
SLeB: "Nate Hills said before we recorded this, 'do you wanna go up, or go down?' It's about dance-floor politics."
NR: "It was instant smiles as soon as we gave in to our disco temptation. Which is always a good sign. It's like a song inside a mirror ball."
Tricked Out
Music: Duran Duran and Nate Hills
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass
NR: "We set out to do something unusual for the live show, a special moment. Usually the instrumental song is the one that doesn't make the album and ends up as a bonus track, so I'm very happy we all liked this one."
SLeB: "I was going to do a melody over it but then I thought I'd leave it. This gives me a chance to change my shirt during the concert!"
RT: "This takes us back to our roots. 1979, Joy Division, Siouxsie, post punk with a bit of techno."
Zoom In
Music: Duran Duran, Timbaland, Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Co-produced: Duran Duran, Timbaland, Nate Hills
NR: "This is a very cool mixture of electro and rock. It feels very super-cyber-futuristic. The drum track was really one-take, all the way through."
JT: "Very Timbaland, very Nate, very New York, a real transition track for us."
SLeB: "It's about the Second Life virtual world that exists on the web which Neil Stevenson writes about in his novel Snow Crash, where you can create an avatar. The sound was angular, digital, something from a different perspective."
She's Too Much
Music: Duran Duran and Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass
SLeB: "It's about my 16 year old daughter Saffron. She was in the studio that day and triggered the lyrics. I didn't know I was writing about her until the second line 'she's everything head first.' It tells a story. It's a soft moment on the album."
NR: "This is a key track, a story telling ballad, which touches base with our traditional songwriting."
JT: "We built this up in a very textural way around the chords."
Dirty Great Monster
Music: Duran Duran and Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass
NR: "It's about the elephant in the living room. We brought in a sax player for this one and said to him 'play something that's really 'sick'.' And he did and it really made the track."
SLeB: "It's a song without a chorus. It doesn't pay off in the way that everyone expects."
Last Man Standing
Music: Duran Duran and Nate Hills
Lyrics: Simon LeBon
Co-produced by Duran Duran, Nate Hills and Jimmy Douglass
SLeB: "This one has very soft vocals."
RT: "This is one of my favourites. We did a lot of overdubbing with Dom Brown, the guitarist we use for our live shows."
NR: "The missing link between this album and our last, 'ASTRONAUT'. Simon is so good at assuming a character."

Duran Duran - 2007 biography
London May 2007 – Robert Sandall
The stats on DURAN DURAN are remarkable: a total of over 70 million records sold, 18 American hit singles, 30 UK top 30 tunes, and a global presence which guarantees them huge concert audiences on 5 continents. More remarkable still is the way they have achieved this, fusing pop music, art and fashion with a unique style and confidence.
When they first broke in the early 1980s Duran Duran single-handedly transformed music video from a gimmicky marketing tool into one of the music industry's most valued assets. With exotic locations, beautiful girls and stunning effects, Duran Duran took the visual imperatives of the New Romantic movement to another level. Their impact throughout the 1980's was such that Rolling Stone magazine - adapting the old Beatles' sobriquet -dubbed them 'The Fab Five.'
Despite the occasional pause and some re-grouping in the 1990's, Duran today are an unstoppable force who still command the respect of the finest players in the game. On their next studio album (slated for release on Epic Records in the fall of 2007) they have collaborated with top producers Timbaland and Nate 'Danja' Hills, as well as long-time Duran fan Justin Timberlake.
Formed in Birmingham, England in 1978, by keyboardist Nick Rhodes and bassist John Taylor, Duran Duran's early sound was an exciting stew of influences: the soul music of their youth, the vibrant New York underground music scene of the 1970's spearheaded by the New York Dolls and Velvet Underground, the iconic art pop of David Bowie and glam bands such as Roxy Music.
At the time, John was at Art College and Nick was still in the 6th form at school. The first incarnation of the band was rounded out by another art student Stephen Duffy and a friend, Simon Colley who was at catering college. Simon played clarinet and bass, Nick had one small synthesizer and a drum machine, John played guitar and Stephen sang and played a fretless bass.
After Simon and Stephen moved on – Duffy to The Lilac Time and more recently Robbie Williams – a number of new faces came and went before Roger Taylor, previously drummer with local punk heroes The Scent Organs. joined the band. With Roger on board, John took up the bass and the newly christened Duran Duran - named after a character in Roger Vadim's sci-fi classic movie Barbarella - started to develop a funkier style, more in tune with some of the up-and-coming bands of the post-punk era such as Japan.
They began to create waves in Birmingham's premier music club, the Rum Runner. Listening to their demos, the club's owners, Paul and Michael Berrow, gave them a residency and a rehearsal space. Auditions for new band members followed, with guitarist Andy Taylor answering an ad in Melody Maker and singer Simon LeBon joining after being introduced by an ex-girlfriend, who bartended at the club. Unlike the rest of the band, Simon came from the suburbs of London, but was studying drama at Birmingham University.
In the months that followed, the band worked tirelessly. By 1980, after supporting Hazel O'Connor on tour, Duran Duran became the subject of a fierce record company bidding war. Eventually EMI Records came through, putting the band immediately into the studio with producer Colin Thurston.
Their eponymous debut album sold more than 2.5 million copies in 1981, staying on the charts for an astonishing 118 weeks and spawning the giant hit single 'Planet Earth'. That same year, Duran began to challenge expectations. They became the first pop act to produce a 12" remix single, for 'Planet Earth.' and also released a controversial video, directed by Godley and Crème, for the dance mix of 'Girls on Film'. Its sexually explicit content led to it being banned by both MTV and the BBC.
Incorrectly perceived by the rock media as the poster-boys for a new generation of teeny boppers, Duran's first major statement was the antithesis of a traditional pop album. The lyrical themes were adult-orientated, and the music – while melodically bright and dance-fueled – had a much darker quality. As the band themselves pointed out, there was a shadowy, European twist to the album. Songs like 'Careless Memories' weren't far removed in mood from bands like The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen. What saved Duran Duran from the gloomy cul de sac of goth however, were their dance-inducing rhythms and Rhodes' experimental electronics.
Duran Duran's ascent coincided with that of the so-called "Second British Invasion" which conquered America in the 1980s. Unlike contemporaries such as Spandau Ballet, Human League, Ultravox and Culture Club, they endured thanks to their exhaustive touring, imaginative embrace of new technology and superior song craft. Classic chart-toppers such as 'Hungry Like the Wolf', 'Rio' and 'Save A Prayer' soon turned Duran's second album 'Rio' multi-platinum worldwide. It was during this period that Princess Diana declared Duran Duran to be her favorite band, and new friends like artists Andy Warhol and Keith Haring publicly voiced their support.
From 1983 the band went super nova. The video for Hungry Like the Wolf, which was filmed in Sri Lanka by director Russell Mulcahy went on permanent rotation on MTV. Later that year 'Is There Something I Should Know' went straight to 1 in the UK and hit 4 in the US. The band's third album, 1984's 'Seven And The Ragged Tiger' earned Duran Duran their first Stateside 1, with 'The Reflex'. In 1985 an invitation to write for the movie 'A View To A Kill' earned the group another first when their song became the only Bond theme tune to make it to 1, an accomplishment that is still unrivalled today.
Now that the Duran brand had become a licence to print money, EMI wanted another album. For the first time in years, the band said "no", taking time out to draw breath and regroup creatively. John and Andy teamed up with Robert Palmer, former Chic drummer Tony Thompson and bassist Bernard Edwards to form the Power Station; while Nick, Simon and Roger embarked on a side project: Arcadia, with guest performers Grace Jones, Sting, David Gilmour and Herbie Hancock.
While the Power Station's self-titled album found Andy and John moving further away from Duran Duran's signature sound, with a loud hybrid of funk and glam rock, the Arcadia album 'So Red the Rose' was a sublime reaffirmation of the mother ship's style. Pulling threads of darkness from 'Duran Duran', and adding glittering shards of pop reminiscent of 'Rio' and 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger', the album's first single, 'Election Day', was dark electro-dance-pop at its very best.
In July 1985, the five members of Duran Duran reunited to play in Philadelphia at the historic Live Aid concert. Although no one knew it at the time, this would turn out to be the final performance of the original lineup. Chapter One of the Duran saga was now over
Other projects beckoned. In early 1986, John was approached to write the theme for the film "9 1/2 Weeks." In April, his solo tune 'I Do What I Do', charted on both sides of the Atlantic. As plans started to take shape for Duran Duran to begin work together again in the studio, drummer Roger Taylor abruptly announced that he wanted another year off and would be returning to his Gloucestershire farm. The four remaining band members convened in the studio in June but before long they were down to three when Andy Taylor followed Roger into temporary retirement. With hindsight, he says his departure wasn't fuelled by a desire to embark on a solo career. This was, however, the outcome.
With Andy gone, and Roger officially resigning shortly thereafter, Duran Duran were in free fall. But not for long. In August, the remaining trio were contacted by guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, whose own band Missing Persons had recently folded. Later that year Duran Duran 'Mark II' teamed up with producer Nile Rodgers to record the funk-based album 'Notorious.' The album's title track topped the charts, propelling the record to multi-platinum status. (Fourteen years later, the same song was sampled by Sean "Puffy" Combs on the posthumous Notorious B.I.G. release, 'Born Again').The band were back on a roll. 'Notorious' was followed by 'Big Thing' in 1988, and the release of 'Decade' in 1990, celebrating what for them had been a glorious ten years.
Their sixth studio album, 'Liberty,' came out later the same year, with new drummer Sterling Campbell replacing two-time collaborator Steve Ferrone. In 1993, Nick, Simon, John and Warren went back into the studio to record 'Duran Duran 2'. Better known as the 'Wedding Album' – because the album artwork featured photos of their parents' weddings – the CD spawned the award winning smash "Ordinary World" and its equally acclaimed follow-up 'Come Undone'. Released the following year and garnering some of the best reviews of their career, as well as a prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting award, the 'Wedding Album' sold more than four million copies around the world. A new generation of ardent 'Duranies' were born.
'Thank You,' a covers album, gave the band a chance to pay homage to many of the artists who had inspired them over the years, such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Led Zeppelin, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. Later in 1995, LeBon performed with tenor superstar Luciano Pavarotti at the War Child benefit concert in Italy.
Other festivals and tour dates followed, while, between gigs, John Taylor teamed up with the Neurotic Outsiders, a quartet of rock and roll wastrels comprising former Sex Pistols' Steve Jones, Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum. Originally formed to play a benefit gig in LA their onstage jam led to them signing, for one eponymous album to Madonna's Maverick Records.
In 1996, John Taylor officially left Duran Duran to pursue various solo projects. Undeterred the following year the band contributed 'Out of My Mind' to the film version of 'The Saint' and released 'Medazzaland,' The album featured 'Electric Barbarella,' the first song ever to be sold in a download format across the Web.
In 2000, after the release of two Duran tribute albums - featuring artists as diverse as Kylie Minogue and Ben Lee on one, and the Deftones and Goldfinger on the other - Hollywood Records put out the 'Pop Trash' CD. The band supported this with an extremely successful international tour that featured the first ever use of 'augmented reality' technology in a live concert. At the end of the tour, Warren Cucurrullo left for his original group Missing Persons. And then there were two…
As the 21st century loomed the future of Duran Duran lay in the balance. Simon took a well-earned break, while Nick joined his long time friend and original band mate Stephen Duffy, as The Devils, to work on an album, 'Dark Circles', which was released in late 2002.
But no sooner had Duran finally disbanded than the impulse to re-form began to assert itself. Conversations jump-started old allegiances. As 2001 rolled around Duran Duran's original 'Fab Five' went back into the studio to embark on writing together for their first album in almost eighteen years. Energised by the challenge of "taking back their crown", Simon, Nick, Andy, Roger and John worked long and hard on an album which finally appeared on the Epic label in late 2004. 'Astronaut' sold more than two million copies and was heralded by critics as "one of their best studio efforts." The UK top five single "(Reach Up For The) Sunrise" earned the band their highest chart position in their home country for 20 years.
The two-year world tour which accompanied 'Astronaut' was a box office smash which saw them playing to more people, in more places, than ever before. This career-best concert outing served as a reminder that the band remained a fighting force with an incredible back catalogue, an awareness which led to their being honoured with no fewer than five prestigious "Lifetime Achievement' awards in the space of two years. Between 2004 and 2006 Duran Duran's extraordinary creative longevity was recognised by the MTV Video Music Awards, the BRIT'S, the Ivor Novello's, the Spanish music industry "Onda's" and Q Magazine's annual Q Awards.
With three generations of fans now on their case, Duran had no option but to record another album. Not even the departure, for the second time, of guitarist Andy Taylor, could dent their creative momentum.
In September 2006, Simon, Nick, John and Roger flew to New York for a super stellar week-long collaboration with the studio sound genius and Grammy-award-winning producer Timbaland, Nate ’Danja' Hills and the current king of pop Justin Timberlake. The sessions produced three to-die-for new tracks. The rest of the album was completed and mixed with Danja back in the UK.
Duran Duran's future has never looked brighter, or busier. This summer sees them performing at two of the biggest concert events on planet rock, the memorial Concert For Diana at Wembley stadium and the Live Earth eco-awareness bash at Hyde Park. Autumn brings the new album and a tour which will stretch well into 2008, Duran's 30th anniversary year. Having outlived all of their contemporaries, they have nothing left to prove and everything to play for.
Новый плей-лист от Ника с комментариями на myspace.com:
New playlist from Nick Rhodes
Category: Music
Nick has chosen a new playlist. "Nite-Runner" and "Falling Down" are sticking around from the last playlist, since we naturally want to keep the new songs in the rotation. Here's what Nick says about his choices:
1. Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile)
2. A View to a Kill
3. Breath After Breath
4. Falling Down
5. Nite-Runner
There is a slight theme to my choices, which is collaborations.
The first song, "Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile)," was written by Steve Harley and released by his band Cockney Rebel in 1975. It was a Number One single in the UK for many weeks and, despite being about the breakup of his band, an incredibly uplifting piece of music. It was one of the first cover versions that Duran Duran ever performed, and although we never recorded it in the studio, it became very popular in our live show. This version was recorded at Hammerstein Odeon in 1982 and became the B-side of the single release to "The Reflex."
"A View to a Kill" was Duran Duran's first real musical collaboration with another artist. It was written in 1985 for the film of the same name, and we worked with John Barry, who had previously scored many James Bond films and had co-written title tracks. The idea was to merge the sound of Duran Duran with the sound of Bond.
On the song "Breath After Breath" we collaborated with the Brazilian artist Milton Nascimento. His style of songwriting and performance was very different to ours – but we were able to produce a piece of music that incorporated elements of both styles. The track became one of the highlights of "The Wedding Album." Milton is a remarkable artist.
"Falling Down" was the last song to be written in the sessions for the "Red Carpet Massacre" album. It was recorded over a 36-hour period in Manchester, UK together with Justin Timberlake.
"Nite-Runner" was the first track to be written and recorded for the "Red Carpet Massacre" album. We were in the Studio in September of last year with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and Nate Hills. They are a pretty formidable team, and on our first day together this is what we created.

Whether you're spending it in a cathedral, a hot and sweaty jump-up in the Islands, at home with the parents or a mud hut somewhere beautiful, here's me - a/k/a Simon Le Bon from Duran Duran - wishing you a Merry Cherry & a Happy New Year…and remember, easy on the chocolate liqueurs. Whoooshmas! Simon
I just love the holiday period through to New Year's Eve and I hope everyone that's out there has a pretty good time of it this year. To those of you who have been following the progress of the band this year, G-d Bless ya and thanks for staying interested. I hope you had a great year and I have a feeling that next year is going to be even better for you, I just know it, don't ask me how I know!…John x
Happy Holidays - its been a great year for us again, the album's finally been delivered and I hope that you are loving it. We can't wait to take it around the world next year. Have a great one and we will see you in 2008! All Love and Happy Holidays, Roger x
It seems a little less than a year ago when I was writing a similar message, I guess what goes around does come around, suitcases are the first thing that come to mind, or perhaps small dolls dressed in international costumes… Now, wouldn't it be just delightful if we could take the dolls with the sharp teeth and appetite for ripping stockings from the movie Barbarella, and simply do a holiday exchange with the Magic Kingdom.
I realized yesterday that it would be enormously helpful to me if options were more limited. Yes, less to choose from. I found this a little bizarre, and almost shocked myself for a brief moment, as I always want more options, and even more variations on those options, but then I realized that I don't at all. All I want are the right options. Now of course this gets rather more complicated, because the options I may consider to be appropriate may be your idea of a nightmare. It all gets so time consuming, and time is precious and non negotiable, one must be very careful when consuming it, hence there are only 12 tracks to choose from on our new album. Had there been 18, it would have made things 50% harder for you with such a limited amount of time available for listening pleasures, but I suppose had there been 6 then it would have been 50% easier… Then there is the value for money equation. Personally I prefer quality over quantity, but then if everything was the same quality and readily accessible, we would have no comparisons and be forced to accept the standard issue, a world with no choice… Actually can't think of anything worse! I secretly quite like some of those trashy
things too.
I wish you all Happy December and concise, decisive new year filled with beautiful options.
Love from London. Nick X
PS. Red seems to be 'In' this season.
